Here’s why you should sleep naked in the winter (yes, really)

I cannot think of anything worse than sleeping naked. I prefer to cover every inch of my body in comforting (and often claustrophobic) linens than feel so exposed – and it seems I’m not alone. According to a recent study by Mela, only 22.7% of the nation sleep totally naked, with the 55–64-year-old category being most likely to do so.

But after a quick headcount on our morning Zoom call, most of my colleagues admitted they forgo their nightwear and opt to sleep stark naked – even in the winter – and my judgement aside, it seems they’re onto something.

Sleeping naked might not be the first thing you think about when it comes to improving your health, but it can be a practice that offers an array of physical and mental benefits that extend well beyond the night. Yes, really.

Sammy Margo, Sleep Expert at Dreams, explained: “While many people might think that bundling up in winter is the best way to keep warm, sleeping naked can actually help to regulate your body temperature and improve your sleep quality. It’s a surprising yet effective way to stay cosy and comfortable during the cold months, while giving our bodies that much needed wellbeing boost too.”

While sleeping naked during winter might seem counterintuitive, here are some unexpected benefits to consider:

‌You could fall asleep faster

Your body temperature plays a crucial role in the timing of your sleep. It’s intricately linked to your circadian rhythm – the internal clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. Allowing your body to cool down by sleeping naked can signal to your body that it’s time to sleep, potentially facilitating a faster onset of sleep and a more efficient transition into restful slumber.

Enhanced intimacy and emotional bonding

Sleeping naked with a partner in the winter may lead to increased physical and emotional intimacy. It encourages skin-to-skin contact, which can release oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and trust, ultimately improving your relationship.

‌Improves complexion

Cleaning your face before bedtime is often advised to prevent clogged pores that can lead to skin issues. However, the same principle applies to your entire body. Sleeping without clothing can facilitate better skin ventilation, reducing the likelihood of skin problems such as breakouts, as your skin is free to breathe and maintain its health.

Increased self-confidence

Sleeping naked may boost your self-esteem and body image, as it encourages you to embrace your natural self. Feeling confident in your own skin may have a positive impact on your overall well-being.

Improved genital health

It can help promote good genital health in men and women, by encouraging air flow and preventing overheating. Sleeping naked may help keep Candida yeast from flourishing in the vagina, because yeast infections are often caused by inadequate air circulation, commonly due to tight or synthetic underwear.

Anyone going sans nightwear tonight?
