Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey is reportedly set to star as the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s Netflix movie adaptation of one of CS Lewis’ much-loved Chronicles of Narnia novels. This will be a reunion for the duo after working together on 2023’s super blockbuster Barbie, with Greta due to write the script and direct.

Netflix has declined to comment about this latest development, but call us beyond excited.

Emma is rather in demand right now and starring in some other seriously exciting movies, including Hot Milk alongside Fiona Shaw, as well as leading December 2025 release Ella McCay with Jamie Lee Curtis, Ayo Edebiri and Rebecca Hall. She’s also set to star in an untitled JJ Abrams film with Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, which will definitely be big.

What is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie about?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be updated from CS Lewis’ novel The Magician’s Nephew, which is the sixth of seven novels in the series, but also acts as a prequel to the previous stories.

It features the creation of Narnia by Aslan the lion, and also the White Witch’s origin story – as she also features heavily in the best-known Narnia story, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Part of The Magician’s Nephew also focuses on two children discovering how to travel between worlds.

Who is in the cast for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie?

Reports have said that both Charli XCX and Margaret Qualley were also considered for the part of the White Witch, while Meryl Streep is said to be playing talking lion Aslan.

We would predict that Saoirse Ronan may also be cast, as she has worked with Greta before on her rendition of Little Women and the amazing Lady Bird. Vulture reports that Mikey Madison, Daisy Ridley, Brie Larson, Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman have also been considered for parts in the film.

When will Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie be released?

It is set to be released in late 2026, with a two-week cinema run and then dropping on Netflix. We also know Greta will be making at least two Narnia movies, but there’s no confirmation yet as to when the second one will be released.
