Burgundy bags are the must-have accessory for autumn 2024

You heard it here first, burgundy bags are about to flood your feed.

With the first whiff of autumn in the air often comes the itch to change up our hair, then the inevitable swap from sandals to boots, and very soon, the packing away of our raffia basket bags for a more sensible autumn option. The good news is, it doesn’t always have to be in a gloomy hue or a boring tote.

Every year sees a breakout style emerge (remember the pillow bags?) and it’s already becoming clear what 2024’s must-have is — burgundy bags.

The sultry hue found its way onto plenty of the FW24 runways. From Gucci to Hermès to Chanel, models were dripping in oxblood (sartorially speaking, of course), and the bags were no exception. While the sensual colour is often a favourite across ready-to-wear and accessories for autumn, it’s worth noting that the burgundy bags this season come in a more structured silhouette, be it boxy clutches at Hermès or even the rectangular Hug bag at Ferragamo. The idea is to add a touch of evening elegance to a daytime look.

“Burgundy is the undoubtable colour of the season,” Libby Page, Net-A-Porter Market Director tells us. “Sabato de Sarno’s Gucci led the way and head-to-toe looks seen at Erdem, Ferragamo, Khaite and Emilia Wickstead gave maximum impact and delivered the message that burgundy is the new neutral.”

This sleek bag style was all over street style at Copenhagen Fashion Week, too. Our favourite influencers provided a style lesson in how to pair the trend with denim and dresses alike for the everyday, giving us plenty of inspo for our turn this autumn. Shortly after, influencer marketing platform LTK reported a 7000 percent(!) increase in searches for burgundy bags. If we’re being honest, we definitely contributed to that number.

Even celebs aren’t immune to being influenced. Of course your favourite cool-mom Katie Holmes is ahead of the curb, as she was spotted carrying a burgundy tote all week, pairing it with another huge autumn trend — the leopard print.
