It would have been the first time that Swift has taken a boyfriend as a date to an awards show celebrating her accomplishments — though, she did attend the 2019 Golden Globes with Joe Alwyn. During the VMAs, all eyes were naturally on Swift as she danced along, as she is famous to do, to performers like Katy Perry, Karol G, Sabrina Carpenter, and Eminem.

Prior to the VMAs, Travis Kelce shared some words of encouragement for Taylor Swift while on the New Heights podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce. “Hopefully Taylor can walk away with a few, she’s nominated for about ten of those things tonight,” Kelce said. “Hopefully she can walk away with some moon men. Those are always one of the cooler trophies. The space guys.”

The night also came during a big week for Swift, who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as her 2024 presidential candidate choice late Tuesday night, Sept. 10. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” she wrote on Instagram. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
She signed the letter, “Childless Cat Lady.”
