We’re calling it – this is going to be the high street dress of the summer

When it comes to summer fashion, there’s little that the good old British high street excels at more than dresses.

Maxi to mini, shirt to A-line, linen to denim, printed to embroidered… if you’re in the market for a great new summer dress you’re spoilt for choice. That is, of course, if you have time to trawl through the seemingly endless pages of product.

Which is where we come in. And having done lots of trawling over the last few weeks – both personally and professionally – we’re pleased to announce that we’ve found something of a high street winner.

The perfect throw-on piece in the heat, whether you’re heading abroad or just battling the furnace-like temperatures on our country’s public transport system, H&M’s button-up Bardot-sleeved shirt dress ticks just about every box.

Available in two different colour ways – beige and black or blue and white – the striped midi is made from a perfectly breathable soft cotton weave with a gently elasticated trim to the top and a slit at the hem. With a super airy silhouette but long sleeves and buttoned cuffs, it’s perfect for those long summer days that flow through into slightly breezier evenings.

Pair it with your favourite trainers and a crossbody bag for those casual weekends spent whiling away the hours on a picnic blanket with friends, or your favourite flat sandals for slightly dressier plans.

If you’re heading into the office, it would look great with a low-heel pointed slingback pump and tote bag, while a heeled sandal and oversized clutch bag worn tucked between your elbow and your waist is the perfect way to elevate things for date night.

Of course, if you’re lucky enough to have plans to be frolicking on a beach anytime soon it’s the ideal piece to throw over your swimwear with a sunhat for a waterside lunch. Just don’t post it on Instagram if you want to remain un-blocked by the shamelessly envious among us who are too unorganised to have made any holiday plans just yet…
