Viola Davis just proved to us why the curly bob reigns supreme

Can we just tell you how excited we are that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over? Our actor friends and acquaintances deserved more pay, more transparency, and more protections; crew members deserved the opportunity to get back to work.

Selfishly, we’re also so thrilled that the end of the strike means celebrities can get back on red carpets and serve up incredible beauty looks that demand to be seen, like Viola Davis’ head-turning curly bob at the premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Although Viola Davis made a couple of non-industry high-profile appearances this fall — at Paris Fashion Week and the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Albie Awards — it’s been five months since she walked a film-focused red carpet. Back in May, she wore an amazing Afro to the Cannes Film Festival, and while it’s hard to top such an epic look, on the 13th November, she reminded us that there’s more than one way to wear curls.

While soft-wave bobs have been having a moment for a while now, Davis’s hair is proof that curls deserve to be spotlighted in above-the-shoulder styles. Her middle-parted look hovered just below the chin, its loose curls not touching the top of her sparkling green dress. Neither too sleek nor too messy, it strikes a perfect balance for what a curly bob can be.

There are, of course, several ways to wear curly bobs. Zendaya has been seen wearing one with even looser curls, while Ciara has gone for a more defined look.

Makes you suddenly start considering the look for yourself, right?

This of course will vary dependent on hair texture, but we’ve come up with a simple, yet full proof tips on how to get your curly bob of dreams from a blow out or straight to wavy hair texture:

Begin with clean and moisturised hair

As with anything you will need a blank and clean canvas, to ensure your curls have a soft and defined finish.

Apply curl-enhacing products

If you want to add curls without heat and have a curly hair pattern then you can simply choose to enhance those curls with a good set of products. While your hair is still damp, apply your favourite curl-enhacing products, such as a curl cream or styling mousse, to help define and hold curls. Celebrity hair stylist Larry King tells GLAMOUR that using a good curl cream like Redken’s Curvaceous Ringlet Anti-frizz Perfecting Lotion and diffusing with a Dyson Supersonic set on a high heat low speed setting is a great tip.

Afrocenchix Natural Hydrating Spray – Sheen

For modern definition, celebrity stylist, Jay Birmingham tells us “point the hairdryer all the way down to the ends to smooth your curls out, but avoid smoothing them out too much as it will give a more natural look”. Anita Rice founder of Buller and Rice Hairsalon add: “spritz Davines curl primer and some Davines sea salt spray to finish. Create more texture and volume by slowly diffusing the hair on a lover speed and heat.”
