The bob haircut remains one of the most searched-for and requested chops you can get, but within the one style, there’s plenty of spin-offs. The textured bob, however, is one of the most laidback and minimal maintenance ways to wear the style.
We’ve seen the Parisian bob and teddy bear bob on some of our favourite stars recently, but there’s also (deep breath): the French bob, the cup bob, the flicked bob, the micro bob and the lob, to name a few. Still with us?
None of them offer quite the same versatility and range as the textured bob, though. The cut blends two of this season’s biggest trends: the bob (a whole moment in itself as we’ve mentioned) and bohemian, carefree texture (which, as we mentioned in our 2025 hair trend report, is a headliner this year. In fact, the the textured bob might just be the sexiest and easiest to maintain rendition of the classic cut yet…
What is a textured bob?
Essentially, it’s a “short, textured, bob that looks amazing with or without a fringe.” Unlike a more traditional blunt bob, “the ends of the hair should be cut very softly to create natural movement without layers,” explains Martha Mackintosh at Larry King’s South Kensington salon.
Why choose a textured bob?
The style is incredibly easy to upkeep, so if you’re lazy when it comes to styling the textured bob is ideal. “This is a super low-maintenance hairstyle that’s at its best air dried with the front tucked behind the ears to frame the face,” notes Martha. “When dry, scrunch in a styling cream for any fluffiness (Larry King’s Social Life For Your Hair is great), and if you’re looking for that extra movement just tong a few random pieces on the top.”
Celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham agrees that this haircut is perfect for those looking for a grungier, more undone finish. “It’s a super sweet bob with a grungy edge that works with so many different face shapes and hair textures. If your hair is a little thin, this style will help it appear thick and full,” he says.
What’s the difference between a textured bob and a layered bob?
If you’re thinking the textured bob sounds a lot like a layered bob, here’s how to differentiate. While layered bobs work best with natural waves, in order to create the illusion of extra volume, especially for finer hair, it does require a bit more styling. The textured bob has a much more subtle shape and also requires less at-home maintenance which is music to our ears. This means lots of movement with more subtle graduation as opposed to the square layers you will find in a layered bob.
Can textured bobs work with already textured hair?
The short answer is yes, textured bobs major on celebrating natural, curly, wavy and mussy textures so if anything, it requires less work if you already have some movement in your hair to play with. For those of us who like to blowdry our Afros, or have some sort of texturiser treatment, this could also work by using a curling wand to create loose waves for extra movement and volume. Ditto, if your hair is naturally quite straight.
