The noughties called, and they want their bubble skirts back

Whether you like it or loathe it, Y2K style is booming right now. Kitten heels, clogs, skinny scarves, statement belts and now bubble skirts are all vying for our attention. And neither I, nor a hefty handful of some of my favourite style stars are sad about it.

Reaching for the big bubble hems, Hailey Bieber recently stepped out in a bold black style, Kylie Jenner posed in a pretty cream co-ord, and Olivia Dean got colourful in a gingham balloon skirt for her Glastonbury set.

As with many fashion finds, the balloon skirt trend started on the runway. Tory Burch, Staud, Conner Ives and Molly Goddard all incorporated the voluminous bottom into their recent collections, and Jacquemus was ahead of the curve, parading a puffball skirt through lavender fields back in 2020. So, arguably, it did take a little while to catch on.

Today, however, the bubble skirt is “one of the most versatile new trends,” according to celebrity stylist, Ellis Ranson, who says “it can be worn in multiple ways, taking you from day to night”.

“The bubble skirt trend actually started in the 80’s before becoming popular again in the 00s, and now it’s officially back, and it’s making us feel great,” shares Ranson. Adding, “I didn’t quite jump onto the micro mini skirt as it felt uncomfortable, slinky and tight and very unwearable, but the bubble skirt, in comparison, is a great style to show off the legs and an easy way to tick off wearing something other than jeans.”

When it comes to styling the bubble skirt, Ranson shares, “There are no real rules; pair it with any of your wardrobe favourites and switch it up from summer into autumn.” However, she left us with a couple of chic ideas. “Kitten heels and a basic vest will give the bubble skirt an effortless evening look, while chunky loafers or a western boot and an oversized T-shirt is perfect for everyday styling. Plus, if you’re into the ballet vibe, pretty pumps, an oversized shirt and little socks will look super sweet.” Now to select the perfect skirt…
