The H&M Studio Holiday Capsule collection is about to answer every party season dress code

The H&M Studio Holiday Capsule collection could not be coming at a better time. It’s (basically) Christmas, and I know I’m not alone in having a handful of festively dress-coded events filling up my calendar. Rest assured if you had any questions about what to wear, though, because this limited-edition lineup just answered every single one.

If you were lucky enough to get your hands on the much-awaited Rabanne H&M collaboration, or even Mugler H&M earlier in the year, then you’ll know these drops tend to sell out quicker than you can click Apple Pay. No other high street retailer does it quite the same.

Landing on Thursday 7th December, this collection heralds a seductive new era for eveningwear, one which is inspired by the clever construction of antique undergarments (think lots and lots of boning) and the raw structures of the Brutalist architectural style. Not too dissimilar from its A/W 2023 drop, which drew on the sophistication of film noir heroines, the H&M Studio Holiday Capsule is romance revisited.

“Timeless dressing and an enduring sense of sophistication defines the H&M Studio Holiday Capsule. We wanted to play around with corsetry, but also revitalise favourite styles like the bias-cut slip dress and the sculptural blazer, all in enduring fabrics that age beautifully,” said Ann-Sofie Johansson, head of design womenswear and creative advisor at H&M.

Key pieces include a captivating and equally voluminous tulle ballgown in fashion’s current favourite shade (red), alongside a sparkling mesh mini dress and several pieces of lingerie. My favourite, though? The tailored coat (read: a borrowed-from-the-boyfriend-style maxi cut I’d honestly wear forever) paired with a floor-skimming silver slip that takes inspiration from retro nightdresses.

Kathrin Deutsch, collection designer at H&M Studio nailed my sentiments exactly by labelling it a “poetic and sensual” combination that makes “for a modern eveningwear formula.”

It can be easy to throw caution to the wind when shopping this time of year, especially where eventwear is concerned, so if you’re trying to make more sustainable and conscious choices then I cannot recommend shopping your own wardrobe (and those of your friends) before all else. You’d be surprised at what you’ll find previous you has already treated current you to. If you are tempted to something new, though, the majority of H&M Studio’s Holiday Capsule is made from more sustainably sourced materials like organic silk, recycled wool, Lenzing EcoVero™ viscose, and sequins made from recycled polyester.

You can shop the full 27-piece lineup online at Hm.com and in store at selected shops when it launches on the 7th December. For now though, get a first look at what’s to come below.
