We’re all for big, beautiful waist-length braids that flow all the way down to your hips, but with the weather heating up, we keep spotting another way to wear the style that’s just as fierce, but also – quite literally – feels fresh and cool, thanks to lopping them above your shoulders. Enter: the braided bob.
Why are braided bobs everywhere?
Braids and bobs remain two of the most popular styles of 2025, so it makes sense that combining the two in one makes for a next-level look. Braids not only offer protection but they can stay slick through four to eight weeks of minimal effort styling-wise, and they look cute. Paired with a breezy bob that offers up a little collarbone action, the cut and style has summer season nailed.
“The bob is a timeless classic. While many women are drawn to long braids, short braided styles have always had their own moment,” braid specialist Je’Ne Sais Quoi Hearn tells GLAMOUR. “Braiders are finding creative ways to achieve a bob look without cutting the client’s natural hair. One popular method right now is blending micro braids over a weave install, which has sparked a wave of new micro braid hybrid styles.”
What should I know before getting a braided bob?
Before you jump straight into braided bob territory, it’s good to figure out what kind of bob you’re after and the braids you want to achieve it. Not all braids and bobs work together and the length and health of your natural hair also have a part to play in the final look. “Most people love the look, but they don’t realise that your natural hair length can affect how the final style turns out,” Je’Ne explains. “If your hair is too long, it can make the bob shape harder to achieve without creative techniques or adjustments.”
Pulling together references is a great starting point, but collaborating with your stylist and listening to their expertise on what is achievable is essential. “Talking to your stylist about your hair length, texture, and overall hair goals will help determine the best approach,” Je’Ne continues.
If you’re lucky enough to have longer natural hair, don’t count yourself out of braided bob just yet – Je’Ne says it can still be possible to achieve. “I’ve seen braiders who are highly skilled at folding longer hair into the braid itself, allowing clients with longer hair to still achieve a clean, sharp bob look – without cutting anything,” she explains. “The look is definitely achievable; it just might take a little extra finesse.”
How do I pick the right braids?
“Pairing the right braids with the right bob starts with understanding your natural hair length and the look you want to achieve,” Je’Ne says. For longer natural hair lengths, boho braided bobs or tree braids are good options to make use of the extra length. “These styles leave part of the hair out of each braid, creating a softer, more textured look while still maintaining the bob shape,” she continues.
