Sweetpea is the dark comedy series all about female rage

One to add to your watchlist: Ella Purnell is set to star in new TV series Sweetpea, exploring a woman’s ‘coming of rage’.

Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, it’s been described as “darkly comedic”, portraying an “intoxicating journey of self discovery, with deadly consequences”. A woman that no one pays enough attention to ends up resorting to some seriously criminal behaviour as an outlet for her rage.

A synopsis for the book points out that “the girl everyone overlooks might be able to get away with murder”. Sign us up ASAP for a serving of this darkness.

“At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens,” Ella has said of the series. “I hope audiences have as much fun going on Rhiannon Lewis’ wild, coming-of-rage journey as we did bringing it to life.”

Here’s everything else we know about Sweetpea.

Sweetpea plot

According to Sky’s plot synopsis, the six-part TV show will follow “wallflower” Rhiannon’s stepping into her power after a series of unfortunate events.

“Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick,” it reads.

“Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?”

Sweetpea cast

Joining Ella will be Smothered star Jon Pointing, Nicôle Lecky, Leah Harvey, Bridgerton‘s Calam Lynch, Ted Lasso star Jeremy Swift and Dustin Demri-Burns.
