New BBC TV series Honey is confirmed as a prequel to Killing Eve

Killing Eve obsessives, assemble. A “flirty” Cold War spy drama currently in the works, Honey, has been reported to be a Killing Eve prequel series, looking closely at the life of the character of Carolyn Martens, played in the original series by the legendary Fiona Shaw.

Shaw’s character divided fans due to the various actions and plot twists we saw her enact (no spoilers!), but whatever way you slice it, she was a master manipulator and perilously funny. We’d love to see more of where she came from.

While Killing Eve followed the cat-and-mouse relationship between assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and investigator Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), Deadline reports that the series will be set in 1982, looking at the life of an MI6 agent named Marta during the Cold War, who is none other than Carolyn Martens herself.

The BBC have not commented on or confirmed these reports yet, but we are seriously excited. A prequel series for Carolyn has been discussed since the airing of the final season of Killing Eve in 2022, so could this be it?

The original series was, of course, first written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and later included Emerald Fennell as showrunner and executive producer, and Honey will see Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle on board, and will be written by Extraordinary creator Emma Moran.

Here’s everything else we know so far about Honey.

What is Honey about?

The plot synopsis for the prequel series reads as follows: “Marta, 24, is a deep cover agent for MI6. Surrounded by enemies and constantly under threat of her cover being blown, she tries her hardest to avoid detection by Friedrich Bauman, the new Head of Counter Espionage for the Stasi.

“Finding herself caught between Friedrich and the reckless, arrogant (and incredibly attractive…) CIA operative Aaron Neeland, she is blindsided by desire in this Cold War menage-a-trois. The risk of being garrotted or incarcerated is nothing compared to the horrifying ordeal of falling in love.”

Honey cast

We don’t yet have confirmation of who will play Marta, or any other character in Honey – stay tuned for further updates as more announcements are made.

Black Mirror actor Imogen Daines played a younger Carolyn in an episode of the fourth season of Killing Eve – will she make a return?

Honey release date

We don’t yet know when Honey will be released, but seeing as production is in such early stages we’re confident predicting it won’t be until at least 2026.

No trailer has dropped yet – we will update this article as soon as one drops, though.
