If turtlenecks aren’t the base to all your winter outfits, then what is?

The foundation to a great winter wardrobe, of which I pride myself on personally, has to be several of the best turtlenecks. This time of year is my favourite for fashion purely for the layering opportunities, and in order to create the perfect look you’ll need at least three of the aforementioned staple.

I’m making it my mission for 2024 to build on my capsule wardrobe. That means repurposing items I’d usually mark for the warmer months and wearing them throughout the year instead. The best way to do that, you ask? By slipping a rollneck on beneath a summer dress or oversized short-sleeved T-shirt and transforming them into winter-proof uniforms. Round it off with a classic winter coat, hat, scarf, gloves and a pair of black boots and ta-da!

If that weren’t enough reason for you to add one to cart immediately, a quick scroll through your favourite influencers’ accounts on Instagram will be. If ever you’ve wondered how you could achieve the same effortless looks as Alice Cross or Vanessa Blair, it really is as easy as owning a roll neck (or two or three).

Turtlenecks have the distinct ability to lend an elegant slant to any ensemble, and they don’t have to be plain in hue or pattern either. If you’re drawn to the simplistic look but prefer a pop of colour or print yourself, look to rollnecks like this bright pink design from Arket, this festive red number from & Other Stories or this patterned offering from Veronica Beard.

And where warmth is concerned, some of the best thermals come by way of a turtleneck. This Heatgen Plus piece from Marks and Spencer or a Heattech top from Uniqlo are spot on, or you could splash out on a cashmere turtleneck sweater. You could even browse the best knitwear brands for a chunky cable-knit iteration and cut out the layering middle man entirely.
