I wore my jewellery the wrong way for years, until a jeweller told me this

Did you know that you can actually make jewellery mistakes while you’re wearing your favourite pieces? I’ve seen a few jewellery trends come and go in my time: owl necklaces, statement necklaces made of what felt like kilos of fake gemstones and, of course, costume jewellery that turned dark after a few weeks and left green discolourations all over my skin. Admittedly, it took me a while to find my style and the jewellery that matched it.

But once you discover what suits you, it’s worth investing in high-quality jewellery that will ideally last a lifetime. Over the years, I’ve also learned that it’s not just good care that makes my jewellery last, but also the way I wear it. After I recently had to have my ring repaired and cleaned, my jeweller gave me some tips and revealed the little mistakes his customers — myself included — make most often.

So, here are the most common ‘jewellery mistakes’ we’re all making, apparently…

1. Wearing bracelets and watches together

Bracelets and bangles are popular additions to a watch. However, there is one thing you should bear in mind: it’s best not to wear these accessories on the same arm. Granted, it looks chic – but when you combine your watch with a matching bangle, you’re not doing your jewellery any favours. If the bracelet and watch rub against each other, scratches that are avoidable might actually occur very quickly. So, wear your bracelet on one side and your watch on the other.

2. Exposing rings to too much wear

The same applies here: if you wear several rings next to each other, this can quickly lead to scratches. Incidentally, these can also occur when clapping. So, before you go to your next concert, think carefully about whether you should leave your favourite piece of jewellery at home. Carrying heavy loads can also damage your rings. I once broke a delicate piece during a long trip because I had to carry my suitcase up and down several flights of stairs. The moral of the story: either travel with very light luggage, or stow the rings safely in it from the outset.

3. Wearing watches too loosely

When I tried on a watch a few months ago, I was surprised at how tightly the jeweller fitted it on my wrist. Of course, you should still feel comfortable and the watch strap should not constrict, but wearing a watch too loosely can actually harm it. When the watch is too loose, the weight of the watch is constantly pulling on the strap, which will eventually break it. What’s more, if the watch is too loose, it will easily slip back and forth on your arm and potentially bump into things. Unfortunately, I speak from experience.

4. Putting on jewellery before makeup and skincare

Jewellery reacts sensitively to various environmental influences such as sweat, humidity or chemicals. It’s no secret that you shouldn’t wear it when cleaning, in the swimming pool or while gardening. But you should also use skin cream or perfume with care if you want to enjoy your jewellery for a long time. Gold and silver jewellery can quickly become discoloured by care and styling products – and pearls are also extremely sensitive to them. If you understandably do not want to do without body lotion, hand cream or hairspray, only put on your jewellery after you have completed your morning styling routine.

Of course, jewellery is still an accessory that you should experiment with and have fun with. These rules don’t mean you have to leave your favourite pieces at home all the time. But I have also learned that taking good care of your jewellery and wearing it carefully prevents damage. And no piece of jewellery really deserves that… not even the huge statement necklace at the bottom of my jewellery box waiting for its inevitable return.
