Hunter Schafer’s new film Cuckoo is giving her serious scream queen hype

Euphoria star’s Hunter Schafer’s latest movie Cuckoo looks like an absolute scream – with some critics and fans suggesting her performance in the upcoming horror will win her a place in the scream queen ranks.

“Honestly, I mean, just from like a terminology perspective, I feel like a scream queen title is for people who have done multiple horror movies and this is my first horror movie,” she told IndieWire in an interview when asked about her scream queen status. “I don’t know if I feel very deserving of it yet. It’s very sweet, the intention, and obviously, it’s a fun word to say, but I would not call myself that cool.”

Here’s everything else we know about Cuckoo.

Cuckoo plot

The film’s plot synopsis reads: “Seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) reluctantly leaves America to live with her father at a resort in the German Alps. Plagued by strange noises and bloody visions, she soon discovers a shocking secret that concerns her own family.”

Hunter has opened up about the depths of her character in an interview with Teen Vogue. “I think it really boils down to grief for Gretchen and trying to outrun it and maybe finding a way out, which I think is sisterhood and Alma at the end of the day,” she said, referencing the grief her character is facing after losing her mother, and the solace she finds in her sister non-verbal Alma, played by Mila Lieu.

Hunter also opened up about brushing up on her American Sign Language (ASL) as part of her role. “It’s something that has been a part of my life since middle school,” she said. “I had quite a few deaf friends in middle school and took ASL lessons and picked that up.”
