Double denim trouble? We’re here to help.
If you’re at a loss for what to wear this week, you can join the club. Tran-seasonal dressing is always a struggle, even for style experts. Not only can the weather not make up its mind this time of year from one week to another, sometimes temperatures can vary drastically even from morning to night.
Enter: double denim outfits. Denim has that in-between weight that’s perfect for these unpredictable temps, which is why ’tis the season to wrap yourself up in it from top to toe.
But how does one dabble in denimania without looking like they’ve walked off a ranch? The answer lies in some clever styling.
Bella Hadid and Katie Holmes are just some of our favourite celebs constantly serving double-denim fitspo, but the street style set during fashion month has also given us plenty of ideas, from savvy layering to unusual silhouettes.
One rule most of them stick to is: Pick one “statement” denim piece per outfit. This means, if you’ve opted for an edgy denim jacket, keep your jeans relatively plain, and vice versa.
Another styling tool is the lace skirts that have been all over the streets this summer. Layer a sheer skirt over a pair of boot cut jeans and just give yourself fully to the return of 90’s fashion.
Skirts are another way the fashion set has demonstrated how to double down on denim. Whether you’re a mini or maxi girlie, denim skirts elevate the otherwise humble fabric so that they’re practically cocktail party-worthy.
The Texan tuxedo has even flooded the spring/summer 2025 runways, with even luxury fashion houses like Chanel and Ralph Lauren leaning into the trend. Accessories have been key to the runway looks, from chain belts to layered necklaces, and even denim bags and shoes to give the casual matching look a high fashion spin. According to the catwalk, more is more when it comes to making a denim-on-denim outfit look expensive.
Just be sure to keep the below tips in mind:
- Opt for the same shade of denim for the top and bottom where possible. It gives the impression of a matching set or one-piece which is what gives it an air of sophistication.
- Find and accentuate your waistline with a belt. A full denim-on-denim ensemble can be quite overwhelming, so try to break it up with a thin belt (avoid giant buckles, unless you plan on entering the rodeo).
- Figuring out the correct proportions for your body is key. If you have a longer torso, go for high-waisted jeans or skirt and tuck a denim shirt into it. For those with shorter torsos, go for long-lined blazers or shirts that fall under the bum.
