Argan oil protects against damage

Argan oil is also thought to provide a protective layer that shields hair from damage – both environmental and also damage caused by heat styling. “There is some evidence that topical argan oil can improve elasticity and help protect the hair fibre from damage, making it especially helpful for hair that is dry, brittle or over‑processed,” Gem notes.

How often should you put argan oil in your hair?

How often you use argan oil depends on your hair type and how frequently you wash your hair. But, says Samuel Ashcroft, principal stylist at Josh Wood Atelier, “once a week works well for most people. If your hair is coloured or chemically treated, you may benefit from using it a little more often.” But a light touch is best when it comes to fine hair – “often just a drop or two on the mid‑lengths and ends when required,” says Gem.

While you should always follow the specific instructions on the bottles of your chosen products, “a simple way to guide usage is to observe how the hair responds,” says Izabella. “If it begins to feel weighed down or greasy, it’s a sign to reduce frequency. Depending on individual needs, it may also be applied lightly to the scalp. However, it is generally recommended to avoid leaving oils on the scalp for prolonged periods, to prevent build-up.”

How to use argan oil for hair: A step by step

Step 1: Shampoo, condition and then towel-dry your hair. “Damp hair absorbs oil more effectively because the cuticle is open,” says Sam.

Step 2: “Apply one to two pumps of argan oil to damp hair, focusing on the mid‑lengths and ends,” says Sam. Avoid applying the oil directly to your scalp, as it can make your roots look greasy.

Step 3: Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the oil evenly throughout your hair.

Step 4: Style as normal.

As a gloss and to smooth flyaways:

“Brush the hair first so the argan oil distributes evenly, then warm a small amount between your palms,” says Gem. “Smooth it lightly through the mid‑lengths and ends, where the hair is naturally driest.” A good product to use for styling is Moroccanoil Original Treatment.

How to use argan oil as a deep conditioning treatment

Step 1: Apply a generous amount of argan oil to damp hair.

Step 2: “Work it through section by section, focusing on the driest areas,” says Gem. “Avoid the roots and, if you have extensions, keep the oil completely away from the bonds, tapes or rings.”

Step 3: Once applied, comb it through gently and leave it on for around 20 – 60 minutes before washing, advises Gem. You can also “leave it on overnight if the hair is particularly dry or stressed from colour or heat styling,” says Neale.

Step 4: Shampoo as normal and follow with conditioner. “To remove the argan oil, apply shampoo directly to the oily areas before adding water, then emulsify, rinse thoroughly and shampoo again if needed,” says Gem. “Hair usually feels noticeably softer and smoother straight away, especially through the ends,” adds Neale.
