In her forthcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, Britney Spears reveals that she became pregnant with Justin Timberlake’s baby during the couple’s three-year-long relationship and had an abortion.
“I always expected us to have a family together one day,” Spears writes in the book, which hits shelves October 24. “This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.” People published the exclusive quotes from her memoir on October 17, noting that Timberlake’s team did not respond to a request for comment.
Spears says that she “never” would have chosen to terminate her pregnancy were she alone, but Timberlake was “so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.” The singer, now 41, adds that she considered the pregnancy “a surprise” but not “a tragedy.”
“I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it,” she says. “Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake first met as kids on the set of Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club in 1992. They began dating in 1999, when they were both 18 years old, and split in 2002. It’s unclear at what point in their relationship Spears got pregnant.
“To this day, it’s one of the most agonising things I have ever experienced in my life,” Spears recalls of the abortion.
The singer went on to have two children with second husband Kevin Federline: Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17.
