The Met Gala steps are a red carpet unlike any other. First of all, they’re rarely red. Second, stars and guests don’t necessarily walk up the famous entryway as romantic pairs. Just as often, a designer will accompany a celebrity wearing something from their brand. Until this year, Zendaya attended with her stylist, Law Roach, as her date. Fashion houses have even created couples; Nick Jonas and his now-wife Priyanka Chopra met because they were both dressed by Ralph Lauren for the 2017 Met Gala. Two years later, they attended the event as a married couple, both wearing Dior.

This year, Met Gala icon Rihanna’s own partner A$AP Rocky has been named a co-chair of the event, but the pair have yet to meet on the carpet. However, Rocky’s fellow co-chairs, Louis Vuitton Men’s creative director Pharrell Williams and actor Colman Domingo, have hit the carpet’s with their respective plus ones, kicking off the night with a touch of romance.

With this year’s menswear-inspired theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” it will not be enough for men to walk next to their partners in any old simple suit.
