30 of Ariana Grande’s most iconic beauty looks in celebration of her 30th birthday

There’s no denying that Ariana Grande knows her way around the octaves. She’s won two Grammys, released seven number one singles and can hit whistle notes so high, they’re in outer space. But, as a modern multi-hyphenate, she’s just as clued up when it comes to navigating and cementing her signature beauty look. In fact her sky-scraping ponytail has become almost as famous as her next-level vocals.

And, as the captain of her own beauty brand, r.e.m. we know how important Ari’s glam game is to channelling her identity as a performer, while also offering an alternative creative outlet to her music. “[Music and beauty] are both totally different outlets of storytelling, but they kind of hold hands in a weird way,” she previously told GLAMOUR. “I think the similarity is the attention to the construction. So when you’re writing a song, making sure the notes set up the hook in the proper way, or that the harmonies aren’t fighting with the strings and everything is complimentary. It’s the same as putting together makeup formulas and making sure that each note is perfect,” she said.

It’s not just making makeup that appeals to Ari’s inner creative though, it’s putting together looks that feel true to who she is. “It feels so honest and so true to me. I’ve spent a lot of time in makeup in my life. I’ve spent a lot of time in the makeup chair, so just to redefine my relationship with makeup and have my own version of it – and hopefully be able to inspire people to express themselves in a new way and have these beautiful products come to life – is thrilling,” she admits.

In fairness, Ariana has experimented with her fair share of makeup moments over the course of her career. Back in 2014 the singer told fans, “I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every other week for the first four years of playing Cat [her character on Disney’s Victorious]. And as one would assume, that completely destroyed my hair.” Ariana went on to add: “My real hair is back to brown and I wear extensions, but I wear it in a ponytail because my actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down.”

And although, Ari’s experimented with other hairstyles, she always comes back to her signature look. She wrote on Twitter in 2018: “My God, going back to a high pony after a few days of not wearing a high pony is a remarkable feeling,” adding, “I’m just supposed to have a high pony u know? Some things are just meant to be and this is jus one of those things.”

Most recently, Ariana entered her Blondiana era after bleaching her hair blonde for her role as Glinda The Good Witch in the upcoming two-part Wicked film, which she’s currently filming.

As for makeup, Ariana recently roasted her trademark 2010s makeup (including the graphic cat-eye liner and overdrawn lips that became her makeup uniform). She posted a video to TikTok miming to audio of Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian with a text overlay saying: “me to old me who wouldn’t dare be seen without a thick cat eye and an overdrawn lip.”
