Why was Scott Mills sacked from BBC Radio 2? What we know so far

Radio presenter Scott Mills has been fired from the BBC over allegations about his “personal conduct” with regards to a “historic relationship”. Mills, who had been host the Radio 2 breakfast show since January 2025, last appeared on the show on 24 March. His contract was reportedly terminated over the weekend.

According to reports from the Mirror, Mills’s dismissal is connected to a 2016 police investigation into “serious sexual offences” against a teenage boy. Mills was questioned by police at the time, but the case was eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence.

The BBC said in a statement: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC.”

Mills previously presented the Scott Mills show on BBC Radio 1 from 2004 to 2022 before replacing Steve Wright as the host of the afternoon slot in 2022. He has also previously hosted a weekend show on Radio 5 Live and had been a UK commentator for the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. Mills was set to be the host of the Race Across the World podcast The Detour.

Meanwhile, Lorna Clarke, the director of music at the BBC, said in a statement to staff: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity.

“Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too. I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything.”

Mills’s dismissal comes amid a series of scandals at the BBC that have seen presenters including Huw Edwards and Tim Westwood facing allegations.
