Warning: spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 ahead.
As season two of House of the Dragon develops, there are many characters that we have questions about. One of which is Saera Targaryen, who has got tongues wagging across the fan universe.
In a recent episode, series MVP Hugh the Hammer has basically dropped a bombshell that Saera, of all people, is his mother. Mind blown.
Here’s what we know about House Of The Dragon‘s Saera Targaryen.
Who is House Of The Dragon‘s Saera Targaryen?
So basically, Saera is the sister of Baelon and daughter of Jaehaerys I Targaryen. It’s revealed in the Fire and Blood book that Saera felt resentful she wasn’t an only child and in her teen years started going to sex parties with multiple partners and talked of marrying the three men she’d been sleeping with, even comparing herself to founder and first king of the Targaryen dynasty Aegon the Conquerer.
As a result of this behaviour, Saera’s father imprisoned her in her room and handed her over to the septas eventually. Instead of becoming a Silent Sister, she ran away to become a prostitute. She then had three bastard sons, seemingly including Hugh the Hammer.
There have been various mentions of her throughout the series, including the most recent episode of season 2, episode 7, named The Red Sowing. Hugh confesses his certainty that Saera is his mother:
“I never knew my father,” he said to his wife. “That much is true. But I did know my mother. I hid it from you. And I’m sorry for that. She worked…in a pleasure house. She was granted more freedom than most because of who she was. And because rich men paid more to f**k a woman with silver hair. She used to tell me I was no different to her brother’s boys, Viserys and Daemon. But I was ashamed of her.”
What have the House of the Dragon cast said about Saera Targaryen?
In an interview, Hugh the Hammer actor Kieran Brew discussed his heavy suspicions that Saera is his character’s mother. In fact, he doesn’t see any other option.
“In truth, I don’t know if I’m allowed to confirm, but it can’t necessarily be anyone else,” Kieran said. “He told me who my mum is and it immediately gave me a huge backstory, huge motivation. Because I scoured the book for information. But I learned quite a lot about her and her offspring and where I may fit within that. And it’s so much fuel for who he is and where he is and what you’ve been seeing of him so far. Like, to me, it’s just like the biggest gift. It was the best birthday present because I couldn’t believe it, you know? I don’t know if that’s me confirming or denying.”
What an intriguing character. We can’t wait for the mystery to unravel.
