What is a cybersigilism tattoo?

If you’ve noticed a wave of spiky, medieval-meets-modern tattoo designs that look like dripping ink, veining, barbed wire or the type of crusader emblems you’d see on an anime video game, you’ll already be familiar with cybersigilism-style tattoos. Already they’ve picked up a celebrity fan base that includes Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Grimes.

Effectively, cybersigilism blends cyber (digital, futuristic new-age designs) with sigil (defined as an inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magical power). It’s an innovative collision of old and new for an ultra-personalised tattoo.

The style features thin lines, spikes and angles, alongside natural looking elements (like lightning bolts and tree bark). It’s widely considered to be the Gen Z interpretation of a tribal tattoo, but without the cultural appropriation. It reflects the increasingly modern and digital age we live in.
