Watch Beyoncé say “trans is beautiful” during a show on her Renaissance Tour


Beyoncé’s masterpiece, RENAISSANCE, is partially a love letter to the subcultures that Black trans women pioneered. And at a tour date last week, she gave an explicit shoutout to the trans community, much to the delight of a lucky fan.

Candace Persuasian, a trans drag artist, posted a TikTok from the singer’s concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey last Sunday. In the video, which seems to have been taken during the outro of the show, Beyoncé is shown in a long, shimmering garment, suspended from a harness. As she floats above the crowd and thanks the audience, she spots a sign held by Persuasian, and reads it, saying, “Trans is beautiful,” into the mic.

In the caption, Persuasian wrote, “BEYONCÉ READ MY SIGN! Thank you Queen for creating safe spaces for queer and trans folks!”

Persuasian additionally told LGBTQ+ outlet PinkNews that the moment when Beyoncé spotted her sign “with her 40/20 vision” was “so special to me because I am a trans drag artist who is constantly inspired by Beyoncé.”

“But I knew that this moment was bigger than me, this was for everyone a part of the trans community,” she told the publication. “Beyoncé truly sees us and wants us to be celebrated!”

The drag queen also spoke to the moment’s personal importance on Instagram. In a post featuring a Beyoncé-inspired drag look, Persuasian wrote that 10 years ago, she “couldn’t afford to see her in concert so I never imagined I would be seeing her in the front row tonight in Club Renaissance.” Persuasian was also featured on the Shop Beyoncé Instagram page in the night’s exclusive merchandise, modelling a free t-shirt she received at the show.

Considering the current magnitude of hate against LGBTQ+ people, especially trans women, even a small shoutout to trans people on one of the most talked-about tours of all time makes a difference. And just last week, Beyoncé briefly updated her website to pay tribute to O’Shae Sibley, who was murdered after vogueing to her music at a Brooklyn gas station. To that we say bravo.
