But also, they belonged to the era of velour tracksuits, ombre tinted sunglasses, exposed thongs and dresses over jeans (vom), so when finally came to our senses and signed them off with a “wtf were we thinking?!” we thought we’d moved on from them forever.
And while other noughties heroes like lip gloss, neck corsages and baguette bags have been redeemed and dusted off for another spin, hair poufs – like bejewelled backsides – remained resolutely #cancelled.
Now though, it looks like they’re coming back. And while, understandably, your first reaction might be to let out a little retch… can we say this out loud…they actually look kind of cute?!
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley resurrected the style just last month to attend the Dolce & Gabbana show at Milan Fashion Week. Her hair stylist, Christian Wood, kept it feeling current by opting for an ultra slick pouf with less of the volume than we’ve seen in years-gone-by and pairing it with sofly-straight liquid strands. At Versace’s SS24 show, an army of models wore the look with dinky barrette hair bows to keep their pouf in place. And celebrity hair stylist, Sophie Sugarman, created a street-style worthy rendition for model, Nadine Leopold, to on take Paris Fashion Week.
“The pouf has reentered the chat. After seeing a resurgence of early 2000s hairstyles go viral on TikTok this year, some of our favourite It-girls are making a case for the pinned-back look that deserves a spot in your fall styling routine,” explained Sophie.
How to do the hair pouf?
As for how to create the hair pouf for 2023, Sophie listed out the steps below.
- Prep damp hair with Unite’s Silky:Smooth Heat Activator to seal in moisture, control humidity, and protect the hair from thermal damage.
- Blow dry the hair with tension to create a silky smooth finish while using a round brush to curl in the ends.
- Once the hair is dry, apply 7SECONDS Glossing Spray to add another layer of thermal protection before going in with a curling iron to perfect the ends.
- Section off the face-framing pieces and pin back at the crown of the head using hairspray to tame flyaways and add flexible hold with a satin finish.
- Finish the look with 7SECONDS Glossing Spray, again, all over for long-lasting high shine.
