Taylor Swift has broken her silence about the alleged terror attacks that were planned to take place during the Eras Tour in Vienna.
The musician, who just wrapped the European leg of the tour, shared her thoughts on Instagram, saying that walking onstage in London at Wembley Stadium post-Vienna cancellations was a “rollercoaster of emotions” for her.
“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” Taylor Swift wrote in her post. “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives. I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together.”
After the shows were cancelled, Swifties who had planned to attend banded together to sing and trade beaded bracelets. Before the London shows, Swift and her team “worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities” to ensure attendees would be safe.
Swift also addressed the conversation around her silence after the alleged attack was thwarted, saying she did so to prioritise her fans’ safety. “Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she continued. “In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to.” According to Swift, her priority was “finishing our European tour safely,” which she and her team did.
On Wednesday, Aug. 7, Swift cancelled the Vienna shows after two men were arrested for allegedly planning to attack the event, per the AP, with one man confessing his plan was to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.”
Swift ended her post by saying that the London shows “felt like a beautiful dream sequence” and that the energy over five nights was “like the most giant bear hug from 92,000 people each night, and it brought me back to a place of carefree calm up there.” The Eras Tour is now on pause until it picks back up again in October, and Swift and her team will be enjoying “a much-needed rest.”
