Sydney Sweeney discusses gaining weight for Christy Martin biopic: ‘I was so strong, like crazy strong’

Sydney Sweeney has opened up about how much she ‘loved’ training for playing boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic.

In an interview with W Magazine, she describes the changes her body went through – including gaining 30 pounds – as she embarked on some intense training to emulate the boxer’s physique.

“My body was completely different,” she recalled. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes.”

“I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, ‘Oh my God’. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

“I loved it,” she said. “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”

Sydney Sweeney wrote about her “gains” on Instagram during her time filming. “Over the past few months, i’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman,” she posted, alongside pictures of her toned arms.

“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honoured to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all,” she wrote.

There was, sadly, backlash against her bulking up, with critics calling her an “Ozempic candidate” and some people on the internet – surprise, surprise – being cruel about her changing body. The actor responded with a post consisting of screenshots of these criticisms, seemingly calling out what was a gross example of misogyny and body shaming.

In her W Magazine interview, Sydney also opened up about her love of sport and being out in nature.

“I love being outside. I was on the ski team, and I wakeboarded. I slalom ski on water. I was on the soccer team and the softball team. And then my parents got me into grappling, which is like wrestling, and kickboxing,” she said. “I was the only girl at the dojo. I trained there from 13 until about 19. I fought all guys. I liked to think that if s**t went down, I might be able to step up.”
