Considering autumn is basically here (you can definitely feel the changes in the air, right?) we’re eager for the wardrobe switch. So in our opinion, it’s time to ditch sandals and swap them for loafers or a pair of the best boots – which brings us on to the style du jour: square-toe boots. While we’re so ready to pull out our jacket collection to wear while strolling with our first Pumpkin Spice Latte, we’re also already thinking ahead to winter coats and winter boots. Because as we all know, the best new season buy always sell out first.
While black knee-high boots are the perfect all-rounder, an ankle boot will never fail and brown boots are the colour to look for, it doesn’t actually matter which style or hue you pick, as long as you focus on the toe detail. Inspired by Jennifer Lopez and Cindy Crawford’s ‘90s wardrobes, it’s the comeback silhouette that’s about to update your shoe racks for 2025.
So what’s so great about the square-toe boots we’re seeing coming through for autumn/winter 2025? Well, unlike their pointed toe counterparts, they’re actually super comfy, no matter the heel height – giving your toes more room to spread out and not be stuffed tightly into boots. And of course, we also love this style for aesthetic reasons – mainly the fact they go with everything from mini skirts and an oversized knit to barrel-leg jeans, if you opt for an ankle boot style.
While square toe boots have always been in the background each year, for 2025, they’re about to become the centre of attention. And it’s all thanks to the success of this silhouette at the autumn-winter 2025/26 shows.
From elegant ankle boot versions by Alaïa and the highest-heeled boots that accompanied Stella McCartney’s dresses and coats, to slim-fit styles by Givenchy, vibrant red pairs by Eckhaus Latta or Western iterations at Ermanno Screvino, there’s no doubt that square-toe boots are back. And we know they’re here to stay.
You could say these boots are more refined than round-toe, which can look a bit dated if not perfectly styled. And although square-toe boots are perhaps a bit trickier to style than classic pointed-toe boots, you’ll be surprised at how versatile they are to style with so many of your everyday outfits. Wearing a floaty maxi dress with a suede jacket? Just add chunky cowboy boots with a sharp square toe. Want a comfy pair of boots to wear to work? Then you’ll be looking for a glossy square-toe ankle boot.
