Yes, Y2K is back in a big way but so is the ‘90s. Just look to the latest TikTok trend – spray body glitter – for proof. Championed by ’90s fashion icons Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Drew Barrymore, this highlighting body makeup hero is making a major comeback.

On TikTok, ‘glitter body spray’ has reeled in an impressive 399.8 million views (and counting) with users showcasing their favourite formulas. From subtle shimmers to pigment-rich powders, these spray body glitters lend limbs a touch of sparkle that’s so ‘90s.

But unlike the ‘90s, where copious amounts of glitter gel covered skin from top-to-toe, the new way to sparkle is far more refined and modern.

For 2023, the glitter trend seems to be more about illuminating and enhancing skin with a soft shimmer or subtle sheen. Instead of applying glitter all over, “it’s being used where highlighter would be placed on the face to give that extra pop of sparkle while keeping it super pretty,” says Melissa Sophia, KISS Products UK lash ambassador and celebrity MUA.

You generally want to be quite sparing with your spray body glitter (think less is more) and apply it to the areas where you want to stand out. So, the collarbones, cheekbones, and down the centre of the arms and legs.

Alternatively, give yourself a sheer second-skin glow like one TikToker, Sophie Cairns, by lightly spritzing your glitter spray all over – it’s a heavier and bolder look but gives you a crazy ethereal vibe (very Euphoria!).

“If you want to go DIY, use a body oil and really work it into the skin then apply a glitter to the high points (aka the shoulders, collarbones and chest) either using a soft shimmer highlighter or a loose pigment glitter,” says Sophia.

While glitter is a fun way to express your beauty identity, many traditional glitters have been made using non-biodegradable micro-plastics, which can filter into our water supply and oceans. If you’re looking to cover yourself in head to toe glitter, make sure you read our guide to the best biodegradable glitter makeup.

And if you want to keep the sparkle solely on your eyes, we’ve also rounded up the best sustainable glitter eyeshadow to level up your out-out makeup.

“This 90’s trend will always make a comeback, especially for festival season, as it’s the easiest way to take your look to another level while keeping it pretty and suited to any fashion look.. you’ll also be sure to stand out,” says Sophia.
