When we first saw Sophie Turner in the trailer for Joan, the latest ITV series inspired by real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington, who became a formidable (and stylish) criminal in 1980s London, our first reaction was disbelief that this was based on a true story, but our second? The outfits are amazing.

The padded-shoulder blazers! The mob wife coats! The jewel tones! The show set in the 80s starring Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner is style-gasmic, filled with sparkly diamond rings, luxurious coats and excellent inspo for bob haircuts. It’s a feast for the eyes as it is for the soul, as the heartfelt story takes us through the glamorous and gritty sides of London at the time.
As the real Joan Hannington told The Sun in a recent interview. “Fast cars, fast living, Michael Jackson at the top of the charts, Dallas and Dynasty on the TV. I loved the glamour of that period.”
Through a six-episode season, Joan follows a devoted mother who, hoping to offer her child a better life, began stealing jewellery by swallowing diamond rings at the jewellery store she worked at and swapping out thousands of dollars worth of accessories through carefully executed heists. Getting into these high-end stores required an enviable wardrobe, and we, as audiences, got to reap the sartorial benefits.
Just as The Serpent brought back all things Seventies after its release in 2021, we foresee Sophie Turner’s glamorous looks doing the same for oversized coats and metallic pumps. So if you too are yearning for a little fashion nostalgia, scroll down to see our modern picks for how to recreate these Eighties classics…
