“But there’s a secret. You don’t know why she’s there and what’s going to happen. I wouldn’t even want you to know she was coming back this time, so I am not gonna say anything about Samantha in the future.”
It wouldn’t be the first time the series has killed off a major SATC character. In the first episode of the first season (spoiler ahead), Carrie’s husband Mr Big (Chris Noth) died from a heart attack, and much of the first season is spent with Carrie attempting to overcome her grief.
The show indicated a couple of messages shared between Carrie and Samantha at the time, with Samantha’s absence being put down to her moving to London. Yet, this upcoming scene will be the first time we see Samantha’s face on the show.
Cattrall previously revealed why she wouldn’t join the cast full time, telling Variety: “Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago? And the job didn’t get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters?”
“Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought that’s smart. We’re not repeating ourselves. And then the movie to end all the loose ends. And then there’s another movie. And then there’s another movie?”
Cattrall referenced the third SATC that was in talks to be made a few years ago but she refused to come back as Samantha then too. However, she added that AJLT is “basically” the third film in terms of the storylines.
While she may just return for one scene in this series, the SATC-era Samantha will always live on as one of TV’s best and most iconic characters.
