Oxblood accessories ruled the AW24 runways

Oxblood is undoubtedly the colour of the season – not only reserved for ready-to-wear, but seen splashed across accessories, too. From boxy burgundy clutches at Hermès to dark berry totes at Loewe – and heeled oxblood sandals at Chloé – we’ve seen countless brands experiment with the colour-way in their accessories collections this winter. And the appetite of shoppers is subsequently growing.

According to shopping platform Lyst, searches for burgundy are up 666 per cent this season, while Google trends saw interest in maroon reach a five-year high in September. Elsewhere, LTK reported a 7,000 percent (!) increase in searches for burgundy bags more specifically.

Widely regarded as an outfit-elevating hue by the fashion set, oxblood makes for an elegant change from the more vibrant red colour trend that went viral in summer 2023. It pairs well with a multitude of autumnal shades already in your cold weather capsule wardrobe (think: black, navy, beige and ivory), and works just as well on your tights, designer belts and jewellery as it does shoes and purses.

But how did it get so big? Let’s cast our minds back to Sabato De Sarno’s arrival at Gucci for spring/summer 2024. As the new Creative Director, he introduced a new colourway, “Gucci Rosso Ancora”: a velvety and rich signature hue inspired by the elevator interior of the Savoy Hotel where Guccio Gucci worked as a porter. It adorned his refreshed iterations of the signature Jackie bag, as well as jackets, skirts and hot pants.

Since then, we’ve seen the colour grow in popularity – with FW24 runways seeing head-to-toe looks appear at Erdem, Ferragamo, Khaite and Emilia Wickstead, and celebrities like Katie Holmes championing the trend.

If you thought you’d be seeing the back of it by the time the season ends, you’d be wrong. Though commonly associated with autumn, oxblood is set to be big news as we venture into spring and the new year – so any luxury oxblood investment will be worthwhile.

Pantone’s trend-forecasting umbrella, the Pantone Color Institute, actually identified “Windsor Wine” (number 19-1528) as a key colour seen at the spring/summer 2025 London Fashion Week shows. Sold?

LOEWE Squeeze Small Chain-Embellished Gathered Leather Tote

Bottega Veneta’s medium Liberta bag is a classic and timeless silhouette, crafted from smooth calf leather and finished with a sculptural metal closure and leather coaxial cord. For something more contemporary, look for Loewe’s Squeeze leather tote: a trending design which was debuted at Loewe’s Fall ’23 runway show and inspired by ’70s styles from the brand’s archives.

CHLOÉ Alizè Buckle-Embellished Leather Sandals

Not just a style to be reserved for summer, Chloé’s ‘Alizè’ sandals are set on a sparkling gold-tone heel – a detail which has become a signature in the brand’s collections of late. They’re crafted from leather and feature complimentary gold, stacked buckles.
