Ten years on, and Olivia and Johannes decided to celebrate their anniversary as if it were their first wedding.
Hundreds of guests, a haute couture Giambattista Valli dress for the occasion – the first of three Giambattista dresses that she wore over the weekend – and a secret location that didn’t even transcend photographs on social media – it was every inch the spectacle we’d hoped for the couple.
But back to that dress. The Bardot neckline, the puffed sleeves, the enormous fall of the skirt, and the unexpected black and gold embroidery running along the neckline – this was a real showstopper moment which spoke to Olivia as a fashion lover first and foremost, above any concept of ‘tradition’.
In fact this dress takes us directly to the wardrobe of the Empress Sissi. That is, to the style of the Austro-Hungarian court of the nineteenth century, where the Bardot neckline and skirts with a lot of volume reigned supreme.
And although the then-popular corset has thankfully been eliminated from the equation, the wasp waist effect is still present in current takes such as Olivia’s thanks to the play of volumes that the design encourages.
Now, to find an occasion to wear such a silhouette ourselves…
