Now here’s something I didn’t expect: Ice Spice with black hair

Some celebrities find their signature look and stick with it forever, rarely deviating from the formula that works for them. Think Taylor Swift’s bangs and red lipstick or Ariana Grande and her ponytail. Rapper Ice Spice is a sterling example of this; she’s been synonymous with the colour orange since she burst on the music scene in 2021, thanks to her instantly recognisable copper hair.

We’ve basically never seen Ice Spice sans her ginger hair colour, which she typically wears in a cropped curly Afro style or long and straight, flowing past her butt. While the shade does vary between auburn and tangerine, it’s always in the orange colour family. Honestly, we’d even go so far to say that she invented the colour orange, the synergy between the colour and her brand is so strong. However, the Y2K rapper changed things up in a big way for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, swapping her signature colour in favour of something deeper and darker.

Ice Spice stuck to her most recognisable hairstyle for the event, with a twist—a fun blend of the familiar and the fresh and new, perfectly timed to the peak of the fall season. The curls were present and accounted for for the event, but instead of her usual orange-red, Ice Spice instead went dark, ditching the copper colour for an all-over espresso black. She paired it with a pink Mongolian lamb coat, slip dress, and thick black cat eye liner, plus a brown lip. (And don’t miss her leopard and zebra-print manicure, which you can see on Instagram.)

Ice Spice has naturally dark hair, so perhaps this is a return to her roots and she’s going to press pause on orange for a bit, or maybe she just felt like doing something different for fun. Either way, the inky hue looks especially pretty against the rosy pink tones of her outfit and black liner, so if you’ve been thinking about going dark, this may just be the sign you’ve been waiting for.
