The summer movie season has officially begun – and may we recommend MaXXXine?
It’s a Hollywood 1980s slasher, starring Mia Goth, and the third instalment of a trilogy. The actor has starred in all three – X, the first in the series, starred Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow, and a prequel Pearl also came soon after – all of which were directed by horror film extraordinaire Ti West.
While so far the series has seen protagonist Maxine trying to make it in Hollywood – now we see her as a huge success, but danger has not eluded her.

MaXXXine plot
Taking place six years after the events of X, the indie slasher’s official synopsis reads: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past…”
And the creepiest part? The story is partially based on real-life events, more specifically the activities of a serial killer called The Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez) who preyed on young women in LA back in 1984 and 1985.
Whats more, Mia Goth has called it the best movie in the trilogy. “It’s the biggest story of the three with the highest stakes and Maxine has gone through so much at this point,” she told Variety. “So when we find her in this new world, she’s just a force to be reckoned with and she goes through some pretty wild adventures.”
MaXXXine cast
Joining Mia will be a whole slew of stars, including Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris, of course) and singer and songwriter Halsey. Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher will also appear, as will Moses Sumney, Bobby Cannavale, Kevin Bacon (who will play a private detective hired to find Maxine) and Giancarlo Esposito (The Boys, Breaking Bad).
