Thanks to her stylish take, Leni Klum just made a controversial Noughties trend feel very modern.
While some millennials may be having a hard time with the Noughties comeback, Gen Z is clearly all on board, celebrating and experimenting with the best fashion pieces from the decade. Exhibit A: Leni Klum has been spotted wearing everything from wide-legged jeans and double denim to low-waist miniskirts all summer. Now, the daughter of ’90s style icon and supermodel Heidi Klum is venturing into the “love it or hate it” trend that divided fashion lovers in the Noughties.
On Instagram, Leni Klum shared a series of pictures with her approximately two million followers showing the model picnicking in the hills of Los Angeles. In addition to the obligatory smoothies from the ever-hyped It supermarket Erewhon, Leni Klum’s Desigual look was particularly intriguing. The 20-year-old is seen wearing a white tank top (with a twist at the neckline, which gives the basic piece a fresh update!) as well as wide-leg jeans and a midi skirt over them.

Skirt over trousers? Yep, that’s right! This unusual combo has been clawing its way back onto the trend radar for a few months now. Instead of mini skirts over skinny jeans, as we saw in abundance on the red carpets in the Noughties, the look is now fresher and more modern: Leni Klum’s look, for example, shows that it’s mainly contrasts that make the styling method exciting. The rather playful vibe of the skirt is skillfully broken up by the combination with the casual jeans.
The look is also an ingenious example of how the currently omnipresent naked skirts can be styled for everyday wear by layering skirts over trousers. While the Desigual skirt is highly see-through thanks to its sewn-together circles and high slits, the casual jeans underneath prevent too much skin from being shown if you don’t want to.
Fancy recreating the look? Then give this Leni Klum-approved combo a try.
