What does glycolic acid toner do?
This liquid exfoliant is most commonly dispensed onto a cotton pad and swept over the face. It then gets to work quickly and, as Dr Ejikeme notes, dissolves the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together to reveal fresh skin underneath. It also speeds up skin cell turnover and “helps treat rough texture, dullness and fine lines.”
Glycolic acid toner isn’t the best choice of exfoliant for everybody, however. Its structure means that it has the potential to irritate. “Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of AHAs, so it can penetrate the skin more easily,” says Dr Ejikeme. “This makes it highly effective, but in those with dry or sensitive skin, it can be more irritating.” In particular, she notes that those with rosacea or a compromised skin barrier may find that glycolic acid worsens sensitivity. “In comparison, lactic acid is more gentle and hydrating, while mandelic acid penetrates slowly and is often better tolerated in darker skin tones,” she explains. In these cases, it’s best to look to another exfoliant, like poly-hydroxy acids (PHAs) or alternative/gentler AHAs.
