They say three times makes a trend, but sometimes in the beauty worl, you only need to see something once to immediately realise it’s about to be big. The first time Hailey Bieber wore glazed donut nails, for example — it was a trend before it was a trend. And now it’s happening again, this time with Sydney Sweeney’s makeup — specifically, her lipstick. We’re calling it: Tauve lip colour is about to be huge.
“What the hell is tauve?” you may be asking. A great and valid question, considering we just made up the word a couple of hours ago. Tauve is a portmanteau that combines taupe and mauve. Taupe on its own tends to be a grayish tan, while mauve on its own is a pale pinkish-purple; both are lovely on their own, but together, an entirely new, chic neutral hue is born, and it’s exactly what we see on Sydney Sweeney’s lips in a new photo she posted to Instagram.
In the picture, we see the Anyone But You actor in the mirror wearing a strappy, off-white top and hoop earrings. Her long, blonde hair has just a hint of bend to it, and her matte makeup is chefs kiss. The neutral tones make for a gorgeous everyday glam look, but it’s the lip colour that really makes it special: not too warm, not too cool, not too brown, not too pink. Sometimes when we look at it, we see more mauve, sometimes we see more taupe, but every time, it looks damn near perfect.

We reached out to makeup artist Ania Milczarczyk to find out exactly what lipstick she’s wearing, but while we wait for the answer, we’ve found a few other perfect tauve lip colours in various finishes.
This tauve shade can be a little hard to nail, so not to look ashy or coffin-ready, especially if you have tan to dark skin complexion. However, it’s still a hue that anyone can rock. Here are our best tips to achieve the look if you don’t have the exact shade on deck:
- Begin with a neutral base: Start by prepping your lips with a neutral base using a lip primer or concealer. This will help to create a smooth canvas for the tauve tones to adhere to and even out the lip natural hues (specially if you have dual coloured lips).
- Find the right lip liner: Select a taupe lip liner or lipstick as the foundation for your taupe look. Taupe provides a subtle, earthy undertone that serves as the perfect base for blending with mauve lipstick shades, and it will also stop the colour from bleeding.
- Layer with mauve accents: To introduce that mauve element, layer a mauve lip colour over the taupe base. Experiment with a matte or satin finish. Matte finishes offer a modern velvety appearance while a satin finish gives you that subtle sheen for added dimension. Use a lip brush for precision, gradually building the colour until you achieve the your ultimate tauve shade.
- Blend, blend, blend: The key here is seamless blending. Use a lip brush or your fingertips to blend the taupe and mauve shades together, ensuring a gradual transition without harsh lines.
- Work with your natural complexion: Remember that to make tauve work for you pick taupe and mauve shades that will compliment your skin undertones. A good way to make sure you’ve nailed your version of tauve is to adjust the ratio of taupe to mauve based on your natural lip complexion and general preferences.

Now it’s only a matter of moments before we see tauve lips everywhere we look — and you can get in on the trend before everyone else. (You’re welcome.)
