It’s fair to say that Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have a special actor-filmmaker partnership, which always shines at the Venice Film Festival. They’ve worked on four films together – three of which premiered at this festival (Kindness premiered at Cannes).
Their first film, The Favourite, won the Jury Prize in 2018; their second collaboration, Poor Things, took home the Golden Lion in 2023; and their most recent film, Bugonia, arrives as one of the big contenders this awards season. Our expectations are high, but at least we can always rely on Emma Stone to deliver a masterclass in red-carpet fashion.
Yesterday morning, Emma arrived at a press conference for the film wearing an all-black ensemble with a lace skirt. She later graced the red carpet in a luminous Louis Vuitton dress with a square-neck design, sequinned straps, and shiny appliqués along its entire structure. The design features a fitted top that broadens into a puffed-out, floor-length skirt. The result? An intriguing play of volumes with an air of uncomplicated minimalism.

In Bugonia, Emma plays an all-powerful CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists, who believe she’s an alien determined to destroy the planet. Everything points to a comedy with those telltale Lanthimos touches of fantasy and surrealism. Will it sweep up at awards season? We can’t be sure. But we know to expect a stand-out performance from Emma, along with co-stars Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone, and Stavros Halkias.
At this premiere, Emma Stone has once again reaffirmed her role as Lanthimos’s absolute muse, as well as one of the most relevant figures in contemporary cinema, capable of shining both on the big screen with her dynamic performances and on the red carpet with her timeless styling choices. We truly can’t imagine film festival season without her.
