It may be August, and you might well be loyal to your summer dresses and sandals still, but this just in: autumn/winter 2025 fashion trends have landed, and editors are already shopping them.
The latter half of the year is by far the fashion set’s favourite when it comes to getting dressed. From the copious amounts of knitwear (worn under winter coats or, as we saw lots of last year, styled atop) to the constant rotation between loafers and boots, it’s far easier to create an outfit when it’s cold out – even despite the fact you need more clothing.
That said, dictated as always by the runways, this season is less about traditional layering per se, and more about making statements. ’80s power dressing is back, everyone’s in their gothic era, and we’re taking note from Shakespeare’s shirting(?).
While you should absolutely reacquaint yourself with your trusty autumn capsule wardrobe, it’s always fun to pull something new into the mix. Ahead, the seven autumn/winter 2025 fashion trends you’re going to want to make a start on.

1. HEAD-TO-TOE BLACK
Sentiments of preaching to the choir ring true here, but black is the new black. Last year was chocolate brown, and spring/summer 2025 was all about butter yellow, but this season is taking a ‘if it isn’t broke don’t fix it’ approach. We saw liquorice looks from McQueen and Junya Watanabe, carbon vibes at Hermès, and Yohij Yamamoto’s collection was nearly entirely obsidian – save for a few pops of violet. So if you’re a fan of an all-black outfit – and who isn’t? They scream quiet luxury, are easy to put together and forever chic – then this is your moment.

2. ’80S TAILORING
If you’re not reaching for the best blazers and wide-leg trousers as soon as there’s a nip in the air, then what are you doing? This year, though, the catwalks have taken to power dressing once more with pencil skirts, carrot-shape trousers, and cropped or nipped-in jackets with padded shoulders. Very ’80s. Look for tweeds and houndstooth checks as seen at Schiaparelli, and colour-blocking like Saint Laurent, in particular.

3. TOTALLY TULLE
Working in unison with the gothic, all-black trend is tulle – the next season’s answer to the summer boho trend. From the no-frills chiffon outerwear seen at Chanel, and the ghostly sheer dresses at Maison Margiela, to the voluminous skirts and gowns at Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy, no matter which way you interpret it, tulle is totally taking over. Carrie Bradshaw will be pleased.

4. EXAGGERATED FOOTWEAR
Mesh shoes have been a firm favourite on social media for a few seasons now, we’ve seen the return of styling the fisherman sandal and jelly shoe this year, and barefoot shoes – or finger toe shoes – are wriggling their way into the fashion ether, too. So is it any surprise that standout and exaggerated footwear was all over the Fashion Week runways for A/W? No. Think: extra elongated pointed toe boots, fuzzy soles (also spotted on several street style stars), angular/sculptural heels and, at Victoria Beckham, footwear that looks to be two sizes too big. Yep, the designer took to a roomy, borrowed-from-the-boyfriend silhouette this season – are we on board?

5. ROMANTIC NECKLINES
Shakespeare; English playwright, poet, and now your biggest wardrobe influence? According to Ralph Lauren, Chanel, McQueen and many, many other designer brands, autumn/winter 2025 is for the romantic neckline. From pussy bow ties and lace, to frills and (you probably guessed it) tulle, take the Elizabethan ruff collar as your guideline and you’ll fail to go wrong with this one.

6. SCARLET FEVER
Colour-lovers, don’t fear, there was some vibrancy to be had on the fall/winter 2025 runways. Instead of last year’s burgundy obsession, though, it’s all about scarlet instead. Opt for a McQueen-style monochromatic look, or go for more easily wearable pops of the bright shade – via your fashion trainers, socks or a cardigan perhaps – à la Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton.

7. MAD HATTER
It goes without saying that hats are nothing new, a good old beanie comes in clutch when temperatures seriously start to plummet, but thanks to the below designers they just got a modern upgrade. Miu Miu took ‘50s-inspired cloches and added ties, Giorgio Armani Privé went down the sequin route with berets and pillboxes perfect for party season, Comme des Garçons debuted a sculptural fedora look, and Schiaparelli opted for height. Bad hair day? Haven’t heard of one.
