Echo Valley, starring Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, looks at the intensity of mother-daughter relationships

Two of Hollywood’s finest, Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, are set to star in an exciting new Apple TV+ movie Echo Valley, exploring addiction and mother-daughter relationships.

We see Julianne play a mother named Kate dealing with a personal tragedy while training horses, when her daughter – Sydney’s Claire – arrives out of nowhere and flips her world upside down. Super exciting to see these two stars onscreen together, telling what sounds like a super compelling story.

Here’s what we know so far about Echo Valley.

Echo Valley plot

Apple’s synopsis for the film reads as follows: “Kate (Oscar winner Julianne Moore) is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire (multi-Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney) — a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate’s doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else’s blood.

“As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child in this gripping tale of love, sacrifice and survival”.

Both Sydney and Julianne have opened up to Vanity Fair about making the movie and their motivations and inspirations to do so. Sydney in particular spoke out about drawing on her own experiences of addiction within her own family.

“I’ve had a lot of family members deal with addiction and then struggle with similar issues as Claire and her friends, and her group that she hangs out with,” she said. “I’ve kind of had firsthand experience with it.”

Julianne is excited about what audiences will make of the story, particularly parents when it comes to the relationship between Kate and Claire. “I’m kind of curious what the reaction will be,” she said. “There will be a sense, certainly, among parents going, like, ‘well, would I do that? How far would I go?’ You’re left with those questions.

“These are my favourite kinds of movies: movies about relationships,” she added. “What will people do for one another? What kind of decisions do you make? How far will you go?”

Echo Valley director Michael Pearce also described some very intense mother-daughter argument scenes. “The way that [Sydney] was screaming at Julianne, I thought she was going to burst her eardrum. It was so intense,” he said. “But as soon as we called ‘cut,’ they were just laughing. They were just so happy to get their teeth stuck into such a meaty scene.”

Echo Valley cast

Joining Sydney and Julianne are, quite frankly, some insane names – including Fiona Shaw, Domnhall Gleeson and Twin Peaks‘ Kyle MacLachlan.

Echo Valley release date

The film will be released on Apple TV+ on 13 June.
