Looking for a life-affirming-type movie with more than a hint of hilarity? If so, My Old Ass, starring Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella, is right up your street.
The movie will see our teen protagonist have a conversation with an older version of herself with one hilarious caveat: this takes place during a mushroom trip.
But humour (and psychadelics) aside, it does beg the questions – what would you ask an older version of yourself, and conversely what would you tell or advise a younger you? My Old Ass explores that with flair and comedy. Plus, it’s been produced by Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap – joining the ranks that include I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman and, of course, Barbie – so we’re expecting big things.
Here’s everything we know about the film so far, including trailer information and its release date (which is really soon).
My Old Ass plot
Describing the movie as a “fresh coming-of-age story”, the plot synopsis reads as follows: “An 18th-birthday mushroom trip brings Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). When the older Elliott starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, she realises she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer.”
Though the premise looks to be quite comedic, the film looks to ask big questions about what to want out of life, as well as being packed with nostalgia for teen years and the importance of self-discovery. Sign us up.
