Anna Wintour delivered a spot-on Miranda Priestly ‘impression’ at the Oscars

When The Devil Wears Prada first entered the zeitgeist—first as a novel, then as a film—then Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour demurred when asked about her thinly-veiled characterisation as the formidable boss Miranda Priestly. But oh, how the times have changed. Meryl Streep made the character an icon—and in the years since the film premiered in 2006, Wintour has more or less embraced the comparisons.

Still, nothing could have prepared us for the 2026 Oscars, where Anne Hathaway joined Wintour on stage to present the awards for achievement in costume design and achievement in makeup and hairstyling. As Hathaway spoke about the importance of costume design, Wintour looked about the audience with a sort of bored expression before putting on her signature sunglasses. Hathaway then looked sheepishly to Wintour and asked what she thought of her Valentino couture look, to which Wintour replied, “And the nominees are.”

Next, Hathaway espoused the importance of hair and makeup to the crowd before asking Wintour to once again reveal the nominees. Wintour deadpanned, “Thank you, Emily,” a line straight out of The Devil Wears Prada.

The timing for Wintour’s cameo at the Academy Award couldn’t have been better, as both the Met Gala as well as The Devil Wears Prada 2 are arriving in early May.

Hathaway, Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt—who starred as the aforementioned assistant Emily Charlton in the original DWP—are returning for the sequel, which premieres on May 1. The Met Gala, Wintour’s annual charity gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, will take place on May 4.

This year’s gala theme is Costume Art, which curator Andrew Bolton described as “the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was, this epiphany.” He added, “I know that we’ve often been seen as the stepchild, but, in fact, the dressed body is front and center in every gallery you come across. Even the nude is never naked. It’s always inscribed with cultural values and ideas.”

Will Anna Wintour make a cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2? Will Meryl Streep attend the Met Gala in full Miranda Priestly garb? We’ll have to wait and see.
