Having been held by New York’s Costume Institute since the 70s, 2020 saw the Met Gala – along with pretty much everything else – cancelled due to the pandemic.
Having also been postponed in 2021 from its usual spot on the calendar, last year’s extravaganza was finally able to bring back the ‘first Monday in May’ tradition, and the 2023 instalment is just two weeks away.
Taking place on Monday May 1st, the Met Gala will mark the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit which is this year entitled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” in honour of the late Chanel creative director.
With Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour serving as the evening’s co-chairs – we’re expecting some pretty major looks.
But while we wait patiently for the final embellishments to be appliquéd and the 2023 red carpet to be rolled out, now is the perfect time to take a nostalgic look back at the Met Gala fashion moments that have thrilled us over previous years.
From a baby-faced Anna Wintour wearing golden sequins and Bianca Jagger in her unforgettable black corseted ball gown, to Rihanna’s outrageously long yellow cape and Beyoncé’s see-through showstopper gown – if the stars didn’t turn heads, they didn’t make this list.
