Who is Zelda in ‘Peaky Blinders’?

*Peaky Blinders The Immortal Man spoilers ahead*

The Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man is here — and it finally gives us a definitive ending to the tale of Tommy Shelby. Spoiler — he is, it turns out, not an immortal man — and, yes, his demise is just as Shakespearean and tragic as one might have hoped.

The film follows Tommy (Cillian Murphy), now living as a recluse in the country, as he is pulled back into the politics and power plays of the Peaky Blinders several years after the events of series six. His return to Birmingham is all thanks to his son, Duke (Barry Keoghan), who is, it turns out, even more immoral and brutal than his father in his leadership of the Blinders. Despite their differences and long-standing resentment, the father and son agree to work together to help take down a Nazi fake money printing plot, and things ultimately take a tragic turn for Tommy, who, it seems, sees this as his final act before he passes the baton onto Duke.

As the men plot and scheme and kill, the women pull the strings in the background. Tommy’s sister, Ada (Sophie Rundle), tries to use logic and persuasion. Meanwhile, newcomer Kaulo (Rebecca Ferguson), a Gypsy medium who appears in Tommy’s crumbling estate one day, uses slightly more sinister, mysterious tactics to guide Tommy back to Birmingham and Duke. And a lot of her plotting seems to be linked to her twin sister Zelda.

For Peaky Blinders fans who haven’t recently done a big rewatch — or, for that matter, for newcomers — there may be a little head-scratching going on here. Who is Zelda? And why is she so important?

Who is Zelda in Peaky Blinders?

Zelda was first mentioned in series 6 of Peaky Blinders.

We learn that Tommy met Zelda in 1914, almost 20 years before the present day. She stole his watch at the Appleby Horse Fair and, after he chased her down, they ended up sleeping together under a tree. Zelda’s father found out and shot Tommy in the chest — although he survived, he never saw Zelda again.

Zelda gave birth to son Erasmus Chiriklo in 1915, never contacting Tommy or telling him about their child.

When Ersamus was older, he found Tommy’s old watch, which was engraved with the words “Saxon Shore”. Zelda told Erasmus his father was the Duke of the Saxon Shore and Erasmus began calling himself Duke.
