Collagen has become the beauty world’s not-so-secret weapon for everything from plumper skin to healthier nails, and its potential hair benefits are currently being much-talked about too. But what actually is it? Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein and plays a major role in the structure of skin, providing the foundation for the follicles where each strand begins. While it isn’t a direct ‘hair growth’ switch, experts say it can support the conditions needed for healthier, fuller-looking hair by helping maintain scalp integrity, providing amino acids used in keratin production, and offering antioxidant support that may help reduce damage to follicles.
How does collagen support hair growth?
“Collagen is rich in amino acids that the body uses to create keratin, which is the protein that forms the structure of each hair strand,” says Melissa Timperley, celebrity hair stylist & founder of Melissa Salons. “When your collagen levels are supported, your hair can become stronger, more resilient and less prone to breakage, which contributes to better overall growth. Collagen also supports the scalp by improving elasticity and hydration, which creates an environment where hair can grow more effectively.
“While it will not make hair grow dramatically faster, it can help reduce damage and keep the hair that you grow in better condition,” she adds.
“Clients ask me about collagen all of the time and the answer is a bit complicated since evidence
surrounding hair growth specifically is still limited and conflicting,” says top hairstylist Nikki Goddard. “For example, small trials suggest collagen peptides improve overall appearance and possibly density over weeks, while medical reviews maintain that there is no strong evidence that collagen supplements specifically boost hair growth speed, appearance or thickness. My take is that it’s helpful for some as an additive – especially if one is lacking protein in their diet – but it’s not going to be the saving grace for your hair loss.”
What to look for in collagen products for hair growth
“Most collagen supplements contain added vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C and D, which will support hair growth,” shares Anabel Kingsley, brand president and consultant trichologist at Philip Kingsley.
“However, we recommend a balanced diet rich in vitamin C first to help the body produce its own collagen and blood tests to check if you are deficient and require supplementation versus taking supplements blindly.”
What to avoid in collagen products for hair growth
“Avoid collagen supplements with unnecessary fillers, artificial sweeteners, excessive sugars or added flavourings if you want the cleanest and most effective product,” Melissa advises. “Stay away from products that do not clearly state the collagen source or the peptide type. If you are aiming to improve hair health, avoid collagen blends that include very low doses of active collagen, as these will not provide meaningful support.”
It’s also important to be aware of allergens, says Anabel: “Collagen supplements come from natural sources, mostly bovine and marine. Anyone allergic to fish, shellfish, eggs, or on a vegan diet should check the provenance of their collagen.”
How to take collagen to maximise hair growth
“Consistency is the most important part of taking collagen for hair growth,” says Melissa. “It should be taken daily for at least eight to twelve weeks to see meaningful improvements. Take collagen with vitamin C rich foods or choose a supplement that already includes vitamin C to enhance absorption.”
