A major celestial event is heading our way today – it’s the first annual solar eclipse, when the moon passes in front of the sun, creating a bright “ring of fire” border around the moon. Or at least, some people will see part of a ring of fire – because this is just a partial eclipse and it will only be visible in Antarctica, as well as parts of southern Africa and South America.
So, we can all put our sunglasses down for now as we won’t see much today – but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel anything as the moon passes in front of the sun.
When is the solar eclipse?
The solar eclipse is set to occur from 11:42 to 12:41 UTC. Unfortunately, it will only really be visible from Antarctica.
What will happen during this solar eclipse?
“Eclipses bring plot twists, wake-up calls, realisations and revelations,” says Emma Howarth, Glamour’s horoscope columnist. “This is an exciting one because it not only falls on the start of the lunar new year but is also the beginning of a new series of eclipses (in Aquarius and Leo) set to shake up our lives over the next 18 months.”
