I usually live in trousers, but these shorts have been my summer hero

Bermuda shorts – or longline shorts as some people call them – are as marmite as jorts are (the denim equivalent, ICYMI). But, love them or loathe them, you can’t deny how chic they look when styled correctly.

Worn à la Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, with a matching blazer and some loafers as summer’s answer to a trouser suit, is my go-to, but I’ve seen the fashion set pairing them with everything from tank tops and kitten heels to the best white T-shirts and fashion trainers of late.

Despite the fact that the boxer short trend is also a thing, long shorts are no less of a fan-favourite amongst the fashion set. And looking at the SS25 runways, it seems we have Burberry and Miu Miu to thank.

Elsewhere, Bel Powley was recently spotted wearing a bright red pair to Wimbledon with a crisp cotton shirt, slick-back hair and some chic sunnies.

So, what exactly makes a pair of shorts ‘Bermudas’? Knee-skimming, loose on the leg and tailored at the waist, Bermuda shorts are a wide-leg trouser-lover’s dream. I would know, I am one. You’ll struggle to see me in anything but a pair of trews when it comes to dressing for the office in fact, but on a really hot day my small collection of longline shorts have seriously come in clutch.

Top of my current wishlist is this pleated linen-blend pair from The Frankie Shop; the neutral, butter yellow tone will go with virtually everything. That said I’m also loving the sportswear trend that’s very apparent RN, and this side-stripe offering from River Island hit the mark.

Ahead, the best Bermuda shorts to turn to when it’s too hot to wear trousers
