Anne Hathaway just gave new meaning to the word “shirt dress.” The actor flew to Rome for a Bulgari event (she’s an ambassador for the luxury jewellery company) and paired her glittering gems with a semi-sheer white button-down dress…that was also a shirt…that was also a dress.
No, the shirt dress isn’t Khaite. It isn’t The Row. And it isn’t Prada (see what we did there?). Anne Hathaway’s shirt dress is custom Gap via the high street favourite’s creative director, designer Zac Posen. The dress takes the idea of a shirt dress and turns it on its head with clever little styling tricks. One shoulder was bare, with the sleeve falling off her shoulder into the crook of her elbow. She wore the full-length dress semi-unbuttoned at both the top and the skirt to reveal a little skin, not to mention a corset underneath the “shirt” portion of said dress.

Posen designed the dress especially for Hathaway, giving a contemporary twist to the brand’s classic white shirt. “By incorporating elements like the shirt’s collar and placket, and adding feminine touches with darting at the waist, we created a modern look that pays homage to the elegance of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday,” Posen said. “It’s a connection of timeless style with contemporary fashion.”
The shirt dress is made from 100% organic cotton and retails in sizes UK 6 – 18 – but sadly, it’s almost entirely sold out at the time of writing, despite only being on sale for 24 hours. Add the dress to your favourites and keep an eye out for a restock.
