And Just Like That… season 3 is around the corner and the trailer that just dropped is already stirring up some questions. Will Carrie and Aidan finally make things right? Will Samantha make an appearance? And most importantly, what fresh joys (or hell) will the wardrobe bring?
The Sex and the City spinoff stars the original cast Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, as well as new beloved characters like Sarita Choudhary as Seema Patel and Nicole Ari Parker as Lisa Todd Wexley. Perhaps even more so than the storylines—which have been heavily debated over, from its “wokeness” to its portrayal of non-binary characters—the costumes also always end up in the headlines, for better or worse.
The original Noughties series saw legendary stylist Patricia Fields create era-defining outfits that transcended the show and became cultural phenomenons that took on lives of their own. Fields had a knack for infusing the characters’—but more specifically Carrie’s—looks with a hint of irony mixed with high fashion that felt exciting and new to viewers.
While Patricia no longer has a hand in the spinoff, her protégés Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago who also worked on Sex and the City have tried to recreate some of the sartorial drama by including cult fashion items like JW Anderson’s viral pigeon clutch or revisiting Carrie’s old wardrobe. Season two, for instance, saw Carrie re-wearing her notorious Vivienne Westwood wedding gown for her last-minute MET Gala look, and let’s not forget the tutus sprinkled throughout the series in a nod to the iconic opening number of the original show.
Fans of canon will undoubtedly say that the wardrobe of And Just Like That does not hold a torch to the original, but one has to admit that there were some beautiful fashion on display, from Lisa Wexley’s pattern-clashing ‘fits to Miranda’s slick suits (and hair).
In season two episode six, when Carrie braved a blizzard in a puffer coat ballgown from the 2019 Moncler Genius collection in collaboration with Valentino’s former designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, we were immediately transported back to the Sex and the City movie moment when Carrie traipses across Manhattan to be with Miranda on New Year’s Eve, shuffling through the snow in heels. It also reminded me of the emotional 2022 Balenciaga “snow globe” show where designer Demna Gvasalia had models storm the runway in a blizzard as a comment on both the climate crisis and the Ukraine war. However you choose to receive the messaging, in these moments, it’s hard to ignore the power fashion has to make a statement.
And I couldn’t help but wonder, what will season three bring? While we wait for the next season to drop on Thursday, May 29, we rank the 17 best looks from And Just Like That so far.
